Four major parties, just 137 women in 1,500+ candidates

Women constitute less than a tenth of the candidates fielded in UP by the four political Over the years, women have not enjoyed much success in the UP elections, which may be one of the reasons that parties are so reluctant to field them. The SP'>BSP and the SP are contesting all 403 seats in UP, while the Congress is contesting 357 and the BJP 399. Only 137 of these 1,500-plus candidates are women.

The SP'>BSP and the SP’s support to women’s reservation has been nuanced in that they insist on a sub-quota for SC/STs, OBC and minorities within the 33 per cent. Party-wise, the BJP has fielded the largest number of women, 42, followed by the SP’s 36 and the Congress’s 33 (its ally RLD has three). Mayawati’s SP'>BSP has nominated only 26 women.
