History
Nagaon was earlier known as 'Khagarijaan'. At the time of the British domination it was spelt as 'Nowgong'. Later on the spelling was changed to 'Nagaon' to have the appropriate pronunciation in Assamese.Geography
The river Kolong, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra, flows through Nagaon and in the process divides the town into two distinct regions - Nagaon and Haibargaon. The railway station in Nagaon is located in Haiborgaon.Education
