Bolpur is a municipality in Birbhum District in the state of West Bengal, India. It is 145 km north of Kolkata and is best known for the proximity to Visva Bharati, the university set up by Rabindranath Tagore the Nobel laureate poet. Given its proximity to Santiniketan and Sriniketan it is one of the seats of Culture and education in West Bengal.

Geography

Bolpur is located at 23°40'N 87°43'E? / ?23.67°N 87.72°E? / 23.67; 87.72.^[1] It has an average elevation of 58 metres (190 feet). It becomes very hot in the summer months (above 40 degrees Celsius in April to July).

Demographics

As of 2001^[update] India census, Bolpur had a population of 65,659. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Bolpur has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 79% and female literacy of 66%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Bolpur is 2km away from Shantiniketan.

Politics

Tapan Hore of RSP won the Bolpur assembly seat from 1991 to 2006, defeating Chittaranjan Rakshit of AITC in 2006, Dr, Sushobhan Banerjee of AITC in 2001, Shibshankar Banerjee if INC in 1995 and Dr, Sushobhan Banerjee representing INC in 1984. Tarapada Ghosh of RSP defeated Dr, Sushobhan Banerjee of INC in 1987. Jyotsna Kumar Gupta of RSP defeated Dr, Sushobhan Banerjee of INC in 1982 and Gourhari Chandra of INC in 1977. Bolpur assembly constituency is part of Bolpur (Lok Sabha constituency). Somnath Chatterjee has won in the Bolpur (Lok Sabha constituency) from 1989 to 2004. As per orders of the Delimitation Commission Bolpur assembly, No. 286, constituency will be part of Bolpur (Lok Sabha constituency) and will be composed of the following: Illambazar CD Block, Bolpur municipality and Raipur Supur, Ruppur and Sattor gram panchayats of Bolpur–Sriniketan CD Block. Bahiri Panchshowa, Kankalitala, Kasba, Sarpalehana Albandha, Sian Muluk and Singhee gram panchayats of Bolpur–Sriniketan CD Block will form part of Nanoor assembly constituency.
