District Magistrate filed an FIR against Varun Gandhi

Pilibhit District Magistrate filed an FIR against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi in Pilibhit following an Election Commission directive.

The three-member Commission which met on Tuesday and discussed the speeches of Varun, a member of the Gandhi-Nehru family, in Pilibhit in which he had made inflammatory comments against the members of a minority community. The comments drew sharp criticism from within his party and allies and outside.

In a slew of decisions, the EC directed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer to file a case under Indian Penal Code and Representation of the People Act against Gandhi.

The cases have been filed under Section 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 123 (a) and 123 (b) and are non-bailable. An explanation has also been sought from the District Magistrate.

It ordered issue of notice to BJP and Gandhi for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct.

The EC also ordered transfer of District officials and suspended two others for alleged dereliction of duty.

Varun, 28, the only son of Maneka and the late Sanjay Gandhi, is contesting his first-ever election from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, earlier held by his mother.

According to Sources some of Varuns statements were highly provocative and aggressive in its support of Hindus.
