The general elections in India will most likely be conducted between April 15 and May 15 in five or six phases, simultaneously with the assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim.
Sources close to Election Commission of India (ECI) said that the first phase will commence on Apr. 15 or Apr. 20.
The Chief Election Commissioner (CES) is likely to announce the dates officially by the weekend.
It may be recalled here that the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 were held in four phases.
The elections will be held in phases to facilitate deployment of security personnel numbering about 60,000. The ECI has instructed the Home Ministry to start preparations for deployment of personnel.
