The election authorities on Monday said that they would probe into the reports that money was allegedly distributed among supporters of SP candidate from Mumbai North-West Abu Asim Azmi.
According to the reports, Azmi’s brother Shahed allegedly distributed wads of currency notes among some participants of Azmi’s procession before Azmi went to the suburban district collectorate to file his nomination.
Mr Azmi, always in news for all the wrong reasons, on Monday filed his nomination papers for Mumbai North West constituency as an SP candidate. He will take on Shiv Senas Gajanan Kirtikar. On way to the collectors office to file nomination papers in a procession, Mr Azmis brother Shahed was reportedly caught on camera showering wads of currency notes among party workers.
A former Rajya Sabha MP, Azmi is the state chief of Mulayam Singh Yadavs party. He dabbles in several businesses and owns at least two restaurants and a chain of footwear shops. The restaurants are managed by his son Farhan Azmi, who recently married actress Ayesha Takia.
Azmi was arrested in the 1993 serial blasts case on the charge of providing tickets to conspirators who travelled to Pakistan for training, but was discharged by the Supreme Court. He has been arrested several times for making provocative speeches.
