India Elections : Azam Khan resigns as SP general secretary

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who was locked in a bitter tussle with the party leadership on the Kalyan Singh issue, today resigned as the party’s general secretary and from its Parliamentary Board.

A miffed Azam Khan lashed out at former BJP leader and chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh and said that he was the main reason behind the step.

He said that Kalyan Singh was the main reason for Samajwadi Party’s defeat in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

“The Samajwadi Party leaders’ closeness with communal forces has prompted me to take the step. However, I will continue to work with the Samajwadi Party like any ordinary party worker,” he said.

Khan attributed the party’s poor performance in Uttar Pradesh (22 seats) to Mulayam Singh’s friendship with Kalyan Singh, who was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh during the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition.
