Election Commission gears up for Maharashtra Assembly Elections

Maharashtra assembly elections are likely in the second week of October.

While announcing the dates, the Election Commission (EC) has to consider the deadline of formation of a new government, the festive season — Ganapati, Dassera and Diwali — and school and college mid-term exams.

The EC will consult with major political parties before taking a decision.

The code of conduct is expected to come into force in the last week of August.
Maharashtra’s elections are to be conducted along with Arunachal Pradesh, where formation of government has to be completed on October 24. Elections there must be conducted before October 15. Since the 60-seat assembly can go in for elections in one phase, it could coincide with one of the two phases in Maharashtra.

According to EC officials in Maharashtra, both phases, with a gap of three to four days, will be completed by the second week of October.
