Bihar Assembly Elections : Akhilesh Singh joins Congress

Bihar Congress got a shot in the arm, ahead of assembly polls, when former minister of state, and dominant Bhumihar leader, Akhilesh Singh resigned from the primary membership of Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal and joined the party.

Mr Akhilesh Singh was minister of state for food and consumer affairs in the UPA-I government from 2004-09. He had formally requested Congress president Sonia Gandhi to induct him and his supporters into the party fold ahead of the assembly elections saying he could play a pivotal role in ensuring the victory of Congress nominees in Gaya, Jehanabad, Arwal and Bhojpur districts where there is a sizable population of his castemen.

Though he ruled out the possibility of contesting the forthcoming assembly elections, Congress is likely to benefit from his presence as he is considered a prominent upper caste face.
