The first phase of Assembly election in UP on February 8, 867
candidates in 55 Assembly constituencies will contest in this. the last date for candidates to withdraw their nominations, 66 decided to pull out of the electoral fray. During the scrutiny process, the Election Commission, on January 21, rejected the nominations filed by 61 candidates. UP’s chief electoral officer said a total of 994 nominations were filed till January 20, the last date for filing nominations.
Sitapur, Barabanki, Faizabad , Ambedkar Nagar, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur , Gonda, Siddharthnagar and Basti will be the first ones to witness polling in the state. With the Congress bagging the maximum numbers after the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the first phase of Assembly elections is likely to witness a keen contest between Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress.
