BJP and MGP come together in Goa

The Bharatiya Janat Party (BJP) won over Congress coalition partner, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) to its side by striking a pre-poll alliance with the regional outfit which will contest eight seats in Goa. MGP promptly wrote to the governor withdrawing support to the Congress government though numerically it has no effect on the government.

According to the deal, besides Marcaim and Priol which returned MGP candidates in 2007, the party will contest in Tivim, Ponda, Dabolim, Nuvem, Benaulim and Quepem. The alliance partners have decided to support the independent candidature of
former Congress state president Nirmala Sawant in Cumbarjua.
