Small parties may play spoiler in 2nd Phase polls

On Saturday, second phase polling started in UP, known for mafia dons and political heavyweights , will go to polls. In the fray are 31 sitting MLAs and 24 former ministers and some notorious dons. This phase will also be an acid test for the smaller parties like Peace Party – which could cut into votes of the major players and spoil their chances of winning.

Over 1.93 crore will vote in the nine districts. The ruling SP'>BSP has dominated the region both in the 2007 assembly elections and in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. In 2007, out of 60 constituencies that this area accounted for pre-delimitation , SP'>BSP won 30 seats, SP 19, BJP seven , Congress two and independents two. In 2009, of the 11 Lok Sabha constituencies in these nine districts , SP'>BSP won five, BJP three, Congress two and SP two. The 2009 assembly segment-wise results shows that the SP'>BSP was ahead in 22, BJP 18, Congress 10 and SP nine.
