UP polls: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind give support to Congress

The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, considered a political offshoot of the famous Islamic seminary, has been openly campaigning for the Congress. Mahmood Madani, Jamiat general secretary and the Rashtriya Lok Dal’s (RLD) Rajya Sabha MP, has been canvassing for Anil Tanwar, Congress’s candidate for the Deoband seat.He is expected to travel across constituencies in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Agra, Aligarh and other adjoining districts to campaign for the Congress-RLD combine.

Madani’s support for Congress has been significant because the average Muslim population in the 128 seats of western UP and Rohilkhand, where polling will be held in the sixth and seventh phases, is 36 per cent. Roughly, they form more than 34 per cent of the total votes.
