Indian National Congress

Indian National Congress is a major political party in India. Founded in 1885 by Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, Womesh Chandra Bonerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Monomohun Ghose, Allan Octavian Hume, and William Wedderburn, the Indian National Congress became the leader of the Indian Independence Movement, with over 15 million members and over 70 million participants in its struggle against British rule in India.

The Indian National Congress which is currently under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi is carrying the legacy of the first political family of India. The dynasty began with Jawaharlal Nehru who was the first Prime Minister of India. His daughter Indira Gandhi, became the natural heir after him. After her assassination in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi took over. After his tragic death, Congress was headed by PV Narasimha Rao in 1991, who did not belong to the family.

In 1999 Mrs. Sonia Gandhi entered politics and took the reins of the party. This was the time when the party most needed the support of the Nehru -Gandhi Family. Now she has matured in the game and is again leading the party in General Elections 2004. The party in her leadership plans the comeback to power.

In the 14th Lok Sabha (2004-2009),  the largest contingent amongst all parties, serve in the house. The party is currently the chief member of the ruling United Progressive Alliance coalition.
