Haryana Assembly Election 2009 : Congress leads in Haryana, but fails to get Majority
Haryana witnessed dramatic twists and turns throughout the day, as the counting progressed. Earlier, Congress was leading in 46-47 seats, and it was believed that Congress will get a simple majority in the state. However, at the end, Congress finished with just 40 seats in the 90-member assembly, 6 short of the majority.
Congress had swept the 2004 Assembly elections in Haryana, by winning over 60 seats. But this time, the party’s performance was below par. The number game has just begun in Haryana, as Chautala urged all opposition parties to unite and form the government in the state.
